Two deputies of the ruling alliance decided to take the baton with the intention of making future-effectively re-election of Ricardo Martinelli.

Martinelli has a majority of deputies (50). Thanks to the PRD defectors, his party dominates the assembly with 27 seats, Panama has 23, while the opposition PRD has 21 deputies.
