THE NEWS IS IN, SO NOW WHAT DO I DO?

************************************************************
Quote of the Week:

"If you don't control yourself, someone else will."

Jonar C. Nadar

************************************************************

At 7:15 AM this morning I saw Michael Henry, one of my co-workers, reading the daily newspaper at his desk, as he does each morning.

I asked him, "Michael, why do you read the newspaper every morning?".

He said, "Because I like to know what's going on in the world; and besides, if my mother calls she might want to discuss something that happened in the world."

The fact is, of the trillions upon trillions of events that happened in the world YESTERDAY alone, we only get to read about those things that a particular newspaper writer (who is very likely 26-years-old) decided to write about...and you decided to read about.

Think about that for a minute. Are you really getting "The
News", or are you getting some writer's interpretation of the news...some writer who is under tremendous pressure by his or her boss to fill all the white spaces between advertisements each day...so that Michael, and many other Americans, have something "important" to discuss with their momma.

If you think it's different for TV news, you're in for a big surprise. They have to fill the space between ads too. I call this stuff "Info-tainment", but the world calls it "News".

I'm sure it was important "News" last night to learn that Wynonna Ryder will not be serving any jail time for her theft at the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Los Angeles. I'm told that in Dallas it came across as a "Special Report" on the evening TV news. I asked Michael, "Is that the kind of news that your momma wants to be sure you know about?"

Or maybe this is the "real" or "important" news. These were some headlines I saw this morning: The Election Results are In! The GOP (Republicans) Rocked! The Fed Lowered Interest Rates to Historic Lows! The Stock Market Reacted Favorably!

It's all the same stuff, except for one thing: The media thrives on negativity, so chances are you're getting a negative slant on everything you see, read, and hear. The fact is that negativity sells more ads.

The real question is: What should you do NOW concerning your investments?

Answer: Nothing. You should do nothing but stay invested in your original asset allocation that you decided on years ago (I'm assuming of course that you did that).

The media will continue to spew information day in and day out from now until the day we die and there is nothing you or I can do about it.

Re-read the quote above. Now, I don't much about Jonar C. Nadar (my brother-in-law, John, emailed me the quote yesterday) but I love the quote and I can tell you that the media is controlling more than 20% of the average American's time. So this quote really hit home for me.
