I've seen similar articles. Costa Rica recently banned new open-pit mining projects ( http://unearthed.earthjustice.org/blog/2010-november/costa-rica-bans-open-pit-metal-mining ), canceled a Canadian company's concession ( http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-11-25/costa-rican-court-annuls-canadian-mine-concession.html ), and other central American countries have moved to restrict mining over the past year ( http://www.reuters.com/article/idAFN0213554520100602). Only Panama and Nicaragua seem to be bucking the regional trend.

Hopefully these nations will take a lesson from Chile. Of course, environmentalists don't seem to be as concerned about mining in the desert as they do in the jungle. I recently came across a Panamanian press pdf suggesting that as much as 44% of Panama could be subject to mining. Of course, the environmentalists are suggesting that 100% of the surface area of a given concession will be a strip mine. =p
