Your monopoly plan is not practical in the real world. There will continue to be competition in mobile barcodes. But, if you are that taken with the idea, you could file a patent. The idea is certainly novel.

It is also not likely Microsoft filed the re-exam because they file ex parte reexams using in-house counsel. They like to use their name at the patent office. That said, they also prefer the court system over the administrative procedures.
