Required reading indeed!! DFH..Thanks for posting the link to the Dr. Severinsky interview. Saves me the trouble of scanning it from the mag.. The interview is by far the most lucid and logical dissertation of what will likely be under the hood of cars for the foreseeable future. Lead acid batteries seem to have a bright future; reguardless of the chosen technology, i.e., fuelcell, hybrid. Of course if Alex Severinsky has his druthers hybrids and lead acid will rue the day.

(TBM) Now, at that time, there were a lot of somewhat stalled electric vehicle research projects happening.

(A.S.)It was not an electric vehicle. I did an investi- gation of the electric vehicle before I came up with the hybrid idea. I said, okay, if the engine can be used, what can we get out of the battery. So I did maybe the best research project in my engineering career. I investigated chemical bonding of the elements in the periodic table; what you can get by combining different materials based on energy densities. I found that in principle you can increase energy density ten times in comparison with lead acid batteries. So it's far beyond what you read about lithium batteries and nickel metal hydrides.
