This is why there is a black box warning on Plavix that was recently placed by the FDA... that alerts doctors and patients about the risk of serious or potentially life threatening injury that could be suffered by individuals who are poor metabolizers of Plavix, rendering the drug ineffective.
Some experts see some drawbacks to metabolizing, genetic testing such as some insurance companies will not cover or reimburse the testing procedure, it also takes several days, currently, to get results, meaning the testing would be unable to help doctors facing immediate actions...
It's very simple for me If I needed to take plavix or if I was a doctor, I would make sure an take the genetic test before taking the drug...
At this time it doesn't seem as though the physicians are mandated to require all patients to take the genetic test, but it would seem as though if you were a physician you would want to cover all your bases and demand the testing to minimize any liability or exposer.
I think this is why Plavix has recently changed all of there commercials and advertising requirements stating that doctors should recommend a genetic test to make sure the drug is right for you...
Of course now Plavix is covering there arse, and now it's time for the physicians to cover there arse by giving there patient a genetic, metabolizing test to make sure it's a fit for that patient..
We are experiencing all this during the ground floor, it's all new for the medical field and this genetic testing should commence a blow out through the market with right product and effective marketing to the medical world... All in my humble opinion.....
