Interesting execerpts from Seagate!!:

"The achievement of certification opens the door to a lot of federal business, where they couldn't purchase an encryption solution without this approval," said Joni Clark, Product Marketing Manager at Seagate. "Our channel people on the GSA list are the big winners here.

"The Opal organization set the best practices in IT security," Clark said. "Our DriveTrust technology was the original self encrypting drive out there, and will eventually be phased out for this. ISV vendors who do software encryption are the only one this affects directly, and it's transparent to everyone else. It's much easier if everyone is following one standard, which is why Seagate is also moving to Opal."

And we knew this:

Clark said that software encryption has traditionally had three obstacles: performance, price, and complexity, since integrating it is difficult. "We are hoping to get over these three obstacles, with hardware encryption," she said. "They have a 25-35 percent increase over price of a normal drive. That's not much, it's very inexpensive."
