The world is full of products that shouldnt have made it. here's a couple of examples.

8-track vs Cassette - both use the same technology; 8-track holds twice as much data. Verdict? Cassettes made it big. Why? Probably due to their convenience factor (smaller size).

Beta vs VHS - Beta was by far the better technology but yet VHS won out. Most will state price as a factor but in the 60's and 70's they were comparably priced. Professionals chose to use Beta due to its quality, in spite of the price not coming down like VHS's did.

Vinyl vs CD's - Now as a prelude to this, and because I know there will be a lot of argument about this one, I will first tell you that I am an audiofile by nature and spent 5 years in the music business in the 80's just as CD's were coming out so I do know what Im talking about. Having said that - Vinyl is far superior to the CD. The most obvious reason being vinyl's ability to reproduce a wider range of frequency response. Noise level you say? A good turntable and a well recorded piece of vinyl will out perform a CD any day of the week. Durability? A well kept record will last forever, just as will a CD will, BUT, scratch a record and you lose a song. Scratch a CD and you lose the whole album!

All these products made it for different reasons. The PTI battery of less weight and lead has its place in the market, although I will agree it probably wont have the impact it may have had 5 years ago.
