Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX), the world leader in hard disk drives and storage solutions, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that they have entered into a joint development and licensing agreement.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop and cross-license related controller technologies
for solid state drive (“SSD”) storage devices to attain the high levels of performance, reliability and endurance demanded by enterprise storage applications.
2009 Apr 16, Wave Systems and Samsung announced today new self-encrypting solid state drives that automatically encrypt information as it is saved to the drive, “an industry first” for SSDs, the companies say. While full disk encryption is a standard feature on typical HDDs, SSDs are a different story. Samsung’s drives — which come in 256-, 128- and 64 GB flavors — are bundles with Wave’s EMBASSY management software and “are now available through at least one major OEM,” which some say is Dell.

One of our more interesting partnerships has been Seagate. So Seagate decided to build full disk encrypting drives. What’s that? It’s a hard disk; in the drive controller they have added security in hardware, where all the data bits spinning on the platters of your disk are now encrypted. Which means that if you leave your laptop in the cab while going to the airport you can’t take the drive out of the laptop, plug it into another computer and just read the drive. Because that bypasses all the authentication into Windows. So they’ve built this as a standard component to the drive. They’ve added very few cents ultimately to the drive.
