The threat fire patent application was filed June 8, 2006, so it is just over four years old. Current average patent processing time was 35 months in 2009, but there is a large spread. Average for this area of technology could be shorter or longer, I don't know.

A software patent that I was involved in was recently approved after almost a six year wait. Nothing special, just an understaffed USPTO and thousands of companies filing patents for every trivial thing they do. The number of patents pending is six times higher now than 20 years ago.

The threat fire patent seems trivial to me, but far more obvious technology is patented and those patents are successfully defended all the time. It's also a good idea to patent everything as a defense. That's just the way the system works these days.
