You would not believe how clever the mafia is with barcodes. Organized crime is the largest producer of fake barcodes, hands down. I could hire a college student to write an app that fakes an onscreen barcode so that it matches the mafia list of credit cards. It could update with another stolen credit card number each time it is used. Endless money.

Waaaay easier than having to produce a plastic card.
