I really think they aren't only doing things on paper. They stated in one of their PRs, one about the patent, that results were not good using a certain configuration for that part but much better using the simpler (patented) version of it. I think there was some talk about them looking for suitable metals too, although not official.

Whether they contraptions they used for testing can be called prototypes is debatable, especially since we don't even know how close to the final product they are. But there has to be practical hands on testing going on by now. There's only so much you can do on paper. At least that's what I got from the info they put out...
