""biotechnology company Nanobiotix (nanobiotix.com), working with the State Univ. of New York at Buffalo (SUNY; Buf-falo, N.Y.; buffalo.edu) has developed a promising application that uses superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals encased within a silica shell. According to researchers, these tiny particles can be engineered to selectively hunt down certain types of cancer cells, and destroy them in the presence of a magnetic field created during a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedure. Meanwhile, scientists from the Georgia Inst. of Technology (Atlanta; gatech.edu), Emory University (Atlanta; emory.edu), and the Univ. of California (UC; San Diego; ucsd.edu), among others, are testing the use of semiconductor nanocrystals (often called quantum dots) to improve diagnostic tests for the early detection of cancer. For example, since quantum dots coated with “homing peptides” can target specific types of cancer cells in live mice, the UC researchers are working to synthesize such particles with both homing peptides and cancer-treatment drugs, to target and destroy cancerous tissue."
