If Beltre really has jumped to the level he hit at last year (or anything in the general vicinity) permanently, then the Ms got the deal of the century on him. And conversely you'd have to say the Dodgers continued their trend of horrible front office performance.

No question Beltre "found" something last year, and no question it's not unheard of for players as they mature to do so at uneven rates, sometimes taking a big jump up from one level to the next. But from .240 and 23 to .344 and 48 is a gargantuan leap. I don't have stats, but I wonder if there's ever been anyone who jumped more than 100 points in average in consecutive seasons.

And I'm not sure the author of the first piece is right to suggest that while there is lots of suspicion about Sosa being juiced, there is none about Beltre.

But it sounds like you've got a really decent guy there. Hopefully he'll be a good addition to the community.

p.s. Is Edgar Martinez sticking around in a role with the Ms?
