Tell me, what is to keep some giant company, say Nextel, or AT&T to keep from blowing up their own balloons and making the same offering?

Sanswire isn't the first company ever to try to do this. It isn't as simple as just blowing up a balloon (or rigging an airship for that matter) and letting it fly until it hits the right altitude. All attempts to date have failed. If they succeed, it will be a monumental success and copying their success will not be a simple feat, although I'm sure some will try.
