notanindex, when evaluations of America's health care system is reduced to comparative cost with other countries, a distorted picture can be drawn. I've lived out of the USA for 14 years and know a bit about other health care systems.

A case in point: At the end of January my wife had a TIA. EMTs took her to the hospital. In a matter of hours she had an MRI and a cat scan to see if there was any damage.

We were away from home due to an ice storm related power outage. The attending cardiologist, who had never laid eyes on her directed she be hospitalized for observation. A special type of MRI showed she had a 90%+ blockage of her left carotid artery.

She was operated on and was in the hospital for 5 days. Here's the reason for my story. My wife is 74 and had a major stroke in 1996.

How would government run health care have been likely to have handled her situation?

This woman is 74. She's survived a major stroke. She just had a minor stroke. Bad Risk! Treatment denied.(I'll bet some here just said "sounds good to me". But it's not their wife or mother.)

With this kind of triage, The System would have saved lots of money. Multiplied by a few million a year, we too could be with the rest of the socialized medicine pack. No thanks!!!
