Charlie, John et al: Over on SI, I posed the question, “What proportion of aggregate global GDP does the hydrocarbon business represent?”

One reader sent me the following by private message:

US oil & ng represent 5-6% of gdp. Europe around 4%. So the global average is somewhere probably around 3-5%.

Can anyone here confirm or refute these numbers? T.i.a. Dew
