It's the cost of producing the content (the film) that's prohibitive. Look at the production cost of a regular film vs. a 3-D film. And then take into account that the theater and the distributor split the proceeds of the film roughly 50/50. A film traditionally has to gross 4X it's production and distribution cost to break even. So if a film cost 250 mil to make and distribute, it must make 1bil to break even. And how many films break the 1 bil barrier?
