Hi, lawtell. Yes, I drove the Trans-Canada from Montreal to B.C. (then turned up to Alaska) years ago, and the summer of '08 I crossed at The Soo and drove to Halifax, mainly to avoid the congestion in the upper Midwest. I was surprised to find it is still a little uncongested two-lane highway just as it had been when I first drove it!
I went to Shanandoah National Park in October '08 then drove the Blue Ridge Parkway down to the Great Smokies National Park, then the Natchez Trace to the Gulf Coast. Beautiful drive, though I did hit snow on the Blue Ridge and again on The Trace. I also stopped and hiked The Appalachian Trail in various places from Vermont to the Smokies. This is a beautiful trip for a vacation. You can check out my photos by clicking the link in my profile.
As to the Trans-Canada highway, I often parked and slept in Irving's truck stops for free. Gas is quite expensive in Canada compared to here. Everyone in the French areas also speaks English, so no language problems. I do love Canada. BTW, don't miss Quebec and Halifax, two lovely cities.
