NTREGOPT is a utility I found at Softpedia, a site that I visit from time to time (along with MajorGeeks)

http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/12/5/12-5-63.shtml

I'm glad you posted my exact words because it seemed confusing when I just read it... what I was trying to imply was the fact that when software is uninstalled, it should COMPLETELY uninstall itself but in the event that it doesn't erase all the registry entries it has made (alot don't, which slows down the registry reads with orphaned data), then Ace Utilities has a function available to take care of that for you.

Unfortunately, Ace also leaves SOME entries but at least you know they are there when you see them on the next Ace kickoff, at which point you can do a manual erase.

Bottomline, NTREGOPT says it best:

"Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based system can become fragmented over time, occupying more space on your hard disk than necessary and decreasing overall performance.

You should use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files and optimize registry access.

The program works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys.

Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive (as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does).

The optimization done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the minimum size possible."

The fact that it says "from scratch" makes it sound like it completely rewrites the registry (negating any changes you've already made) but I can assure you firsthand that my multitude of registry edits are still in place. (you can always save off your registry beforehand to verify this)

P.S. I have PageDefrag as well... another great utility from another great site (where contig.exe comes from)! It runs at bootup on a blue screen and is very fast.

IRT your last post this board, I visit TEG quite often also and have found some very good info there... the best swap file configuration for your box comes to mind.

I might as well plug the Kephyr and Javacool websites also!

G/L.
