Im a little confused here.. How does hitting the ask help the SP? MM's sell you shares they dont even own, at the ask. Then they walk it down to get John Q scardy pants to sell to them.

Vuala! you just bought shares way higher that John Q was willing to sell. MM's get the vig, so to say.
So, with all seriousness, how is it better to hit the ask? What am I missing?
