What happens if you fail to vote? Can you get a "permission slip" to not vote? Like if you're sick or in the hospital?

I think it would be great if we had a voting window longer than a single day. Maybe as long as 4 days ... Sat-Tue. Early voting opportunities have been expanded in Florida and have been extremely well received (and well utilized).
