"Medicare does help the poor, to an extent. Fed law dictates that every ER who receives any fed money - which is just about every ER in the US - must treat everyone who presents with an emergency, but an ER does not follow-up with the uninsured and does not recommend further treatment - they ONLY treat the emergency. Given most poor people only see a doc/ER when they have a real emergency, many times it's too late to help cure/treat a serious problem.
And how about those who have lost their jobs? - You didn't address them. Should we also tell them, "screw you"? "

To be honest (and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this) the unemployed and poor should not get free, full-spectrum health care just as the soup kitchen does not serve filet mignon.
