"Health insurance companies acting like trusts?" - I have no clue what you're talking about...I was under the impression you knew something about the Sherman Anti-Trust Act - my mistake.
As for prohibiting insur corps from crossing state lines, that's a states issue, not a fed gov't issue - you should talk to your state's insurance commissioner if it bothers you so much. And what diff would it make if they could cross state lines? You'd still be dealing with the ONLY industry who offers health insur.
Medicare does help the poor, to an extent. Fed law dictates that every ER who receives any fed money - which is just about every ER in the US - must treat everyone who presents with an emergency, but an ER does not follow-up with the uninsured and does not recommend further treatment - they ONLY treat the emergency. Given most poor people only see a doc/ER when they have a real emergency, many times it's too late to help cure/treat a serious problem.
And how about those who have lost their jobs? - You didn't address them. Should we also tell them, "screw you"?
Nobody argues Medicare needs to be fixed, not me anyhow.
As for vets and the VA, I presume you read the Wash Post's expose' in 2007 on Walter Reed Army Hospital and the lousy care vets were getting/lousy living conditions. Most of the problems at WR have been rectified, as well as other vet hospitals with similar issues.
"Why do most vets hate the VA?" - Most don't. I volunteer at my local hospital and sometimes I see vets who are patients - I've never heard any of them complain about the free med care they get/have gotten at a vet hospital.
Again, you are fixed on the notion that the gov't wants to take over health care. So-called "single payer" would never pass in Congress, imo - the health care industry lobby is too powerful.
My understanding the bill that will be voted on soon will have an OP-OUT clause so states can "opt out" if they don't want their citizens to have a choice on what they pay for health care. You probably want your state to "opt out" so you can remain at the mercy of health insur corps.
