If I was a Socialist and had the power I would destroy the economy of a country and seek to cause social unrest among the populace. As living standards fall and chaos increased I would slowly strip the liberties and self determination of the people. I would take control of every aspect of life in the country under the guise of saving the people. The condition of the country will be so horrible that the people will welcome strong measures to rescue them. The people will be willing to sacrifice liberty to maintain life as they look to me for salvation. All of this power grab will be presented as only temporary but necessary to meet the extraordinary conditions of the country. I would constantly remind the people of how bad things are and gain their trust as I pull them back from the brink of destruction. Once I had all of the power I would gradually allow the economy and conditions to improve. Of course it would never reach the levels it enjoyed previously but that is OK. There will be more equality, everyone will suffer equally under my absolute control. A small group of the "progressive thinking intellectually elite" would control every aspect of human life. Dissension will not be tolerated and will be met with absolute extreme prejudice. Dissension will be branded a hate crime against the people.
Yes, if I was a Socialist and could just manage to get the power to begin I think I could pull this off. I think I could bring about change you can believe in.
It is pretty simple and will work. It has happened in many places in the world but I never thought it would happen here.
