I don't know what Intel is going to do with I2, I know they and HP have said they will support it for years to come. As to the direction of Intel, only time will tell.

A very reasonable position, especially in light of this years moves at Intel. I always find you posts to be thoughtful and well-balanced. Perhaps some day you can explain your reasoning to chipguy, who seems intent on going down with the I2 ship.

On Yamhill, it is probable that Intel did have such a skunkworks going. Intel couldn't just copy AMD extensions unless they already had architected an expanded register set and basic 64-bit primitives. The most likely scenerio is that they did have such a skunkworks going (would you expect less of a great company?) and then adapted AMD64 on top of the Yamhill guts.
