stock =a m.m. stands by his bid and ask and offers to buy or sell at that price. that is their obligation as a market maker it lets them short or do other trades that us mere mortals can not do.if its 1 share or up to 5000 shares they then can move their bid or ask either up or down as they see fit. if they do not want to buy or sell at any given time they just stop making a market in that stock. its very elemental/
