When you open up volume from tool bar why would my master volume control indicator be an orange color and all the others green?

I have no sound.
Have re-checked all plug ins.
Tried systyem restore also.
Done all the trouble shooting XP has available but still no sound and only thing I can think of is the different color must mean something on the master volume indicator.
