spalz/Campaign Finance Reform vs Freedom of Speech

Wow. I have a newfound respect for Tom Delay.

Why am I not surprised at your answer <g>

I think there is a big difference between pornography and Campaign Finance Reform (OK - maybe they are similar in the fact that someone does get screwed, but I digress)

Despite what you hear, there is limited access to porn. Only those who want it, get it. It does not affect or harm you. Tell me how watching a porn movie is going to affect your life? You get a little pleasure and some enjoyment in watching multiple people get off multiple times. What's the harm?

Those who spend billions of dollars on elections can hurt us. They can bias a candidate to vote for their issues. "Those with the most money wins" scenario (I'm sorry, I know that is what you believe - guess I should not argue that point).

If we limit government power, we reduce the desire for outside influences to control the politicians.

I believe the exact opposite. If we limit the amount of money to influence the politicans, then we limit the power of the gov't.

Let's use this analogy. Baseball players - paid huge, ridiculous sums of money. Why? Because a few owners give it to them, leaving the rest of the teams with no chance to win because they cannot compete with the deep pockets. Baseball is suffering today because of no revenue sharing and these high salaries. I don't know about you, but aren't you tired of seeing the same teams in the playoffs year after year? Isn't it the same with only the Republicans and Democrats? I thought you might want to see some kind of reform because it would give some help to the LP.

OK, back to the analogy. Is a ballplayer going to say "Oh no, this is wrong, don't pay me $60 million to play baseball." Of course not. But, if there are limits to what you give them in the first place, then there are no issues in having things get out of control.

I think it is high time for Campaign Finance Reform - maybe McCain-Feingold won't solve all of the issues, but isn't it good to start?
