I do understand what you are saying. Everything does seem scattered.

However, another way to look at it, if you promote something that doesn't exist yet, you can create a desire for the product.

example, when Google started with GMAIL, you can only get an account if you were invited by someone that had an account. It created a "want" for the product. (they were prob. doing a lot of testing a the same time.)
