He notes that an upcoming Pioneer product will handle 600 voice commands for navigation, video and audio systems.

Apart from navigation and traffic information, the terminal will also be able to offer features such as video and music. While Autobacs Seven Co., of Japan is the majority shareholder (40 percent) in the $1.5 million (200 million Yen) joint venture, Omron Corp., and Tsubasa System Co., hold a 10 percent stake each. Other companies involved in this venture include giants such as Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, and Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. The consortium will conduct detailed studies to identify features and functionalities expected by drivers in the telematics terminal. Commercial production is expected to start in 2004.
