It's no longer about oil it's about storage battery's

But to give China her due, let’s start with the good. Beyond the decades of rabid economic growth and last year’s Olympics, China’s made some impressive strides in recent weeks and months that certainly deserve mention…

Like the announcement of what could be the world’s first major mass-produced electric car…

Boring And Exciting...All at the Same

It’s called the Zhong Tai, and where the competition does 60 miles per charge; the Zhong Tai can allegedly do 250. She’s nothin’ to write home about, weighing over a ton on the chassis of Nissan Terios, but if it works – and I have a feeling it might – the aptly named “New Power” could move millions of units and see the windfall of billions in government stimulus.

But the most promising thing about the Zhong Tai and New Power are the dynamic in which they’re developing...

In the same week that GM went bankrupt, Western media got its first glimpse of “New Power’s” new car. With oil’s run to $147 a barrel still in recent memory, full-electric cars are catching more press and garnering more consideration by automakers. They’ve clearly caught the new generation’s eye.

And with China’s population banging on along the path to 150 million cars by 2020, it’s a matter of common sense, domestically speaking. A single technological revolution that could go a long way in removing the pollution for which China’s become known around the world.

And when it comes to New Power’s small shop of just 30 employees, I can’t help but be reminded of Bantam…those free-wheeling masters of the free market that gave us the unforgettable jeep. When faced with a similar situation – a seemingly impossible task where some of the world’s greatest engineers have failed – Bantam made history. And it’s possible that New Power could be on the same path.

But beyond New Power, big business in China is becoming an inescapable fact of life on the cutting edge. They’ve put a major effort into battery development, and it shows. Volkswagen recently contracted the Chinese manufacturer BYD for the batteries that’ll be used in their new vehicles.

And, of course, it goes far beyond batteries. To rare Earth minerals and swap agreements with Brazil and other countries; China’s been very busy lately. But when you look at the news over here, with a Western perspective…something’s often…
