Can someone explain preferred beneficial stock conversion?

Specifically how it is being calculated into the accounting.

The way I understand it is it is the difference between conversion and current share price. So it is a way of calculating a loss to the shareholder by the preferred being in the money. But it is not really a true loss to the company and is more of a gray area of how one views it in the big picture.
