If you read the Herremal et al paper "Effect of Ribavirin on HCV viral kinetics" posted on ivillage by Dewo, take a look at table 2 again. The median viral load on 28 days in the PEG-IFN+Rib cohort has a very clear trend to be lower than PEG-IFN (p=.08 is not bad consider the small sample size). By the way the protocol violation states "dosed in violation of protocol after meeting DLT criteria", so grade 3 liver toxicity is indeed a serious issue.
