Sounds like you are on the right track. It sounds like a resolution problem to me. When you go into Control Panel / Display/ Settings, click on advance. Then check the monitor and adapter. under the monitor check screen refresh rate. Default is 60 Hz, but most monitors can do 70 Hz. I don't know about laptops. Under Adapter their is a list all modes button, also where you can select your mode.
