OT The problem with discussing politics.

It has happened to me on several occasions that I have grown to respect someone greatly for his or her obvious intelligence and decision-making ability and the energy and enthusiasm they bring to tasks assigned. And since I work in software development it is a given that people in my field are supposed to be able to think logically.

Then the subject of politics comes up and generally one of two things happen; either we agree on most aspects and we are both preaching to the choir and the prevailing feeling is “we sure are smart …but we don’t learn anything new“ or “gee I thought so-and-so was so smart but obviously they can’t be if they are a liberal/conservative, and I somehow feel betrayed or my logic is flawed” an uncomfortable situation at best.

Either way little is gained, and the chances of any of us being converted to another viewpoint are near zero, so most likely the end result is name-calling and bitterness.

I value the thoughts of so many on this board; I have high regard for your intelligence and humor and insight. Frankly I don’t wish having that undermined by something as tangential as politics are to this investment (yes I know a case could be made that it isn’t tangential). That’s just the point, making cases – the interest for me is in the putting together of the jigsaw pieces as well as their discovery.

This has been a long strange trip, and besides doesn’t being a Wavoid come before politics?

Best to all,
bowWAVE
