We will see... I am now more optimistic than I was say, 6 months ago. You are correct that there are many factors, but I will say this.
As the new administration slowly starts to get the Economy back on track as they are talking about and
As they get real, open and productive talks going with the other nations of the world about getting things going in a positive direction and
As people start believing that we have a government that really cares and wants to help makes things better (something we have been sorely lacking for a very long time) things will start to improve...
The job situation also has to stabilize and I believe it will.
People Want things to get better and from conversations I have had with many people in different countries they are starting to believe like me that things will improve.
So I do not think 2009 will be worse than 2008, I am not even sure that is possible, but instead things will slowly improve through the next several years.
I also think that when people are overly pessimistic (or so-called "Realistic", which is just another way of saying Pessimistic...) about how things will become, they can create a condition of fear and make bad things happen.
Look at these boards as a Perfect example. You can have 20 people all saying that a stock is Great and just One negative poster comes along and scares people into selling, which creates more (panic) selling...
Negative thinking creates a life of it's own and drags things down even if there is no reason or makes it worse when there is...
I am a big believer in Positive Thinking and Doing.
