of a product. No patent, no protection, especially if the exact ingrediants in their products are totaly unique, i.e., no one else has the exact same ingredients. In this case, you would want to patent your 'unique' properties.
Coca Cola has a patent for their drink. That means no other soda on the market can taste 'exactly' like coca cola, because it's unique to every other drink.
Having said that, I just checked the patent office for McDonald's Corp and Burger King Corp. They have patents, but nothing regarding their 'secret' ingrediants for french fries.
