Sempron 3Q launch to push AMD sales

DigiTimes.com [Monday 14 June 2004]

Advanced Micron Devices (AMD) CPU shipments are expected to rapidly increase beginning in the third quarter of this year amid the availability of AMD Sempron and Mobile AMD Sempron processors, according to sources at Taiwanese PC and motherboard makers.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company shipped about one million K8 CPUs in the first quarter, local makers quoted sources at AMD as saying.

The desktop AMD Sempron processors will be available in Socket-A, 754- and 939-pin platforms, said the sources.

The Socket-A models will use the current AMD Athlon XP processor core, while the 754-pin models will be supported by chipsets codenamed Paris and Victoria, said the sources, adding that the 939-pin Sempron will be unveiled in early 2005.

The first Mobile AMD Sempron processor is likely to be based on the Dublin core built using a 0.13-micron process and will be followed by new models featuring Sonora code built on a 90nm process, the sources noted.

A Chinese-language website suggested that the 32-bit Dublin will come in two models, the 2600+ and 2800+, with 128/256KB of L2 cache, while the Sonora, also built on a 32-bit architecture, will come in 3000+ and 3100+ models.
