I believe that the only other possible answer regarding the number of shareholders is that 269 HOLDERS of RECORD is what they mean.

I have read elsewhere that 1000 investors can hold a stock, in what is known as "STREET NAME", and let's say those 1000 investors all deal through Merrill Lynch. Since the number of individual investors is not known, Merril Lynch counts as ONE Holder of Record.
