Could be a huge short squeeze

NEW YORK, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Short interest on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange increased slightly in mid September, suggesting bearish sentiment on the stock markets has held steady.

The following stocks saw significant changes in positions held by short sellers.

Short sellers bet that a certain stock's price will fall. The data reflect short trades with a settlement date of Sept 15, 2008.

Short interest rose 12.2 percent in Washington Mutual.

The large savings and loan saw its shares fell with investors concerned about its exposure to mortgage backed securities.

About 429.2 million of Washington Mutual's shares were held short, or about 25.2 percent of its total shares outstanding.
