I've done it myself here in Canada , and a good example was Itemus on the Toronto TSX Exchange , symbol ITM.TO. The company went from around the $3.00 or so level to $.00 after it went out of business. You can still cover your short account by either buying the shares from the unlisted US market as symbol ITMUQ or making arrangements with your bokerage to close the short position. Technically you don't have the proceeds of the short position until the short is close out anyways , so unless you close the position you don't receive the funds.
