Hi, Scrooge McDuck, Both download and upload speed are related, if one is low then the other one will be low. I think you said you had a 56K V92 modem. 56k is the top download speed that the modem could do, but the FCC, came out with a ruling that 53K is as fast as they can go. So if the line conditions are perfect with no noise 53k is the fastest connect speed you will ever see. What is the fastest upload speed you will see? This depends on what type of modem your ISP is using. If he has a V92 modem also, you should be able to upload at 45K, if he has a V90 modem that drops down to 33K. Also some of this depends on your modem, my robotic's modem could not download at 53k and upload at 45K I had to set the modem up before going on line. I could have 53k DL and 33K UL or 33K DL and 45K UL. That is with a perfect connection. When you have noise on the line the connection speed goes down. This will affect both UL and DL speeds. Then we get into your ISP and the internet. ISP's, just like any other business are trying to get the most profit, so they try to keep cost down, one of their big costs is their connection to the internet, the slower that is the cheaper it is for them. If a lot of people are connected to the ISP at the same time, even though you have a good connection speed, you are likely to have a slow UL/DL speed. The same is true for the internet backbone, if you can UL during the off peak hours, you will have a better speed.
