Lol, first thing, MMs dont make commission, they make money on the spread... Brokers make money on the commission. And second, its the whole reason the market was ever created, to make the buys equal the sells... If theres big volume, its usually not big because buying is equaling selling, its usually big because someone wants to move the stock. And it DOES make sense because market makers don't play 1 stock, they play many different stocks. So just because one is not moving today doesnt mean theyre not making money. WHen the volume is smaller, the chances that the buying and selling is equal is higher than when it is high... thats why you see big volume on big moves, and small volume when the stock isnt moving
