Linguistics: Entry-Level Position

creating voice-enabled applications for telephone carriers and the general public. We
are located in the University Town Center area of La Jolla, in San Diego County, close to
UCSD.
We have an opening for a part-time position; either a recent graduate or an under-grad.
We are very willing to accommodate students and their school schedules.
The main responsibility of this position will be the generation of phonetics for residential
and business names used by voice-recognition based directory assistance systems in
several countries. This requires an understanding of how people’s names will likely be
spoken by native speakers, as well as people with different accents. The primary
language for this product is English in the U.S., as well as English as spoken in Mexico,
India, Canada, and Nigeria. We also foresee a Spanish language system very soon.
We also sell voice-enabled software for computer users, hand-held devices, and PC
gamers. A linguist would also help us make improvements to these products.
Tasks include: creating and testing phonetics, data management, testing voice
recognition software and test reporting, searching word/name origins and determining
native and English pronunciations, and problem solving to provide better performance
and accuracy.
Must speak like a native American-speaker (no perceptible foreign accent). Expertise in
languages from the following countries is preferred: Mexico, China, Nigeria and India
especially, although expertise in other high-use languages may be adequate.
Understanding the terms of the industry will help (e.g., phoneme, allophone, diphthong,
spirant). Experience with phonetic symbology is a plus (e.g., PSP-PA, IPA, Webster’s,
…), as is the ability to mimic pronunciations of different languages (e.g., Can you say
“Ludwig Puchmayer” mimicking a German-speaker?).
