China's retail sales climb 21.6% in May to $126 billion

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- China's retail sales climbed 21.6% in May, holding near April's nine-year high pace of 22% growth, the Chinese government said Friday. Retail sales in May totaled 870.4 billion yuan ($126 billion), the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement. Retail sales for the January through May period were up 21.1% from a year earlier, the Statistics Bureau said.
