UncleGuido, You're right, the symbol doesn't have to be changed.

But the CUSIP number does. That is the unique ID code for the individual shares. Obviously, there has to be some time lag to exchange the new shares for the old; one to two days for electronic shares and one to two weeks for paper certificates.

There is no sinister motice behind this; it just takes a little time to accomplish. It has nothing to do with "playing with the rest of the Fat Cats!". Believe it or not, NOT everything financial in the world is controlled by criminals or terrorists.
