How can the battery be the problem while the machine is turned on?

My understanding is the battery is to maintain settings while the machine is shut off.

In fact, when I had a bad battery, I still didn't have problems with the machine shut off if I left the UPS on. If I turned the UPS off, i/e totally cutting power to the machine, then the clock would lose time.
