Hi Alea,
I believe it depended on the culture. In my wife's city Pilsen part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, feudalism lasted well past the middle ages into the end of the 18th century.
In England the yeoman and merchants became more powerful due to the labor and also the capital shortage. (Rebecca's father in Ivanhoe.)
