HailMary, while Intel will use this model number scheme to obscure the fact they are uncompetitive, a lot of people will see through it. Maybe not most, but many. I used to hope that AMD would reach the critical mass of a Ford vs. Intel's position as GM - meaning that AMD would eventually get more than 30% of the market and be too large to ignore.

However, AMD is becoming a premium, botique brand. They are playing BMW to Intel's role as GM: AMD is getting recognition among the knowlegable as a technology leader with better performance and features.

Maybe this is a necessary stage, and at 65nm AMD can go after market share without sacrificing quality.

One can always hope. Meanwhile, the BMW approach should be nicely profitable.

GM sells a lot more Saturns than all of BMW unit sales, I believe, but I know BMWs are much more profitable than Saturns. Saturns are like Celeron - low price, gets the job done if you want a basic starter car. Not very exciting.
